'Unearthly' Book Review

UNEARTHLY by Cynthia Hand
4/5 Stars
HarperTeen
435 pg. U.S. Hardcover

One Star for Plot
One Star for Character Development
One Star for Flow
One Star for Conflict and Resolution

This book tells the story of Clara, a Quarterius angel-blood, and how she moves from CA to Montana to save a boy, Christian, from a dangerous fate.
When Clara arrives, she is the speculation of teasing; her hair is bright red. She meets Angela, who we find out is an angel-blood and Tucker Avery, her love interest.
I liked the idea of angels, and I liked the whole 'war between angels and fallen angels(Black Wings)'.
The characters are really developed, and we get a lot more info about them as the story progresses. My favorite character was Angela, because she was strong, smart, and a great angel.
The flow of the book was different than most. Half of the book took place at Clara's new school, and the other half during summer break. Most books I read take place during the full school year. I liked the idea of summer.
The main conflict was that Clara had to fulfill her destiny of saving Christian(an unknown angel) from a forest fire. She also had to choose between Christian, the popular jock, and Tucker, the wise-cracking cowboy. She chooses Tucker, which I really didn't like; Tucker isn't a very well-developed character. My FAVORITE conflict was with the Black Wing, Samjeeza, and Clara and her mother, Maggie. Clara first notices Sam in the mall, but when she enters the forest, he finds her and attempts to bring her to Hell. Clara saves herself, but her mom is heavily weakened. I hope to see more evil angels in the sequel.
The sequel to this book should be released late this year, or early next.
