From Goodreads:
Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.
One thing I love so much about this book is that it starts out as a utopian society, but as the story goes on, we can see the flaws in it, and the society becomes dystopian.
The characters in this book are very different than most others. At the beginning, they all start out the same: blissfully ignorant and adapted to life in Utopia. At the end of the story, the Giver had given the main character, Jonas, so many memories that he can see what life is really like and what it's like to experience love, pain, happiness, etc.
The book is a really quick read, but it was such a great, moving journey to take with the characters and I'm glad that I picked it up.
The Giver has two companion novels: Gathering Blue and Messenger.
